Holistic Nutrition & the Soul: How Food Influences Your Spiritual State

We often forget that our bodies are temples. Not just temples for health, but sacred spaces where spirit and flesh meet. What you eat doesn’t just affect your waistline, it affects your discernment, emotions, energy, and even your ability to hear from God.

Holistic nutrition is more than just healthy eating, it’s a way of honoring the body as a sacred vessel, deeply connected to our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. This approach understands that true nourishment goes beyond calories and nutrients. It considers the quality and source of our food, how our bodies digest and absorb what we eat, and how certain foods impact our energy, clarity, and peace. Holistic nutrition embraces each person’s unique needs and life circumstances, encouraging a personalized, spirit-led path to wellness. It centers around whole, life-giving foods; like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, clean proteins, and healthy fats; while steering away from toxins, artificial additives, and processed ingredients. It's about choosing what aligns with both the body’s needs and the soul’s healing.

1. Your Gut is a Second Brain and a Spiritual Gateway

Science confirms what Scripture and ancient traditions already knew: your gut is directly connected to your mind and emotional state.
But beyond that, it’s where spiritual sensitivity can be either sharpened or dulled.

If your gut is inflamed with processed food, sugars, chemicals, or constant caffeine, your discernment becomes foggy. Your dreams might feel blocked. Your energy dips. And it becomes harder to hear that quiet whisper from God’s Spirit.

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you...?” – 1 Corinthians 6:19

2. Certain Foods Ground You and Others Agitate You

In holistic nutrition, we look at the energy of food, not just its calories.
For example:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables: Life-giving, high-vibration, filled with water and light.

  • Junk food, fried foods, and refined sugar: Dead energy, full of chaos and spiritual static.

Have you ever felt anxious after certain meals? Or unusually irritable or tired? That’s soul clutter.

Food can anchor you or fragment you.

Around the age of 35, I suddenly developed asthma, which came out of nowhere for me. While I don’t always need my inhaler, I’ve had some serious episodes, especially when it’s hot out or during heavy pollen season, or even when I’m recovering from a cold. There have been times when it’s hit me so hard that I’ve had to be rushed to the emergency room because I didn’t have my inhaler on hand. I’ve been learning more about how certain foods especially dairy can trigger mucus buildup in the body. I heard that cutting back on lactic foods like milk, brie, camembert, and even coffee with milk can help reduce that excess mucus. So while I’ll never take a risk and go without my inhaler, I’ve made it a point to cut way down on dairy and stay consistent with things like Vicks vapors, eucalyptus, tea tree oil massages, and warm compresses. I’m still working on it, but just being aware makes a difference. A lot of people don’t realize that what we put in our body can either help or hurt us. Milk has been so heavily marketed to us, especially in those 1950s-style family breakfast ads with a glass of milk next to orange juice; as if it’s a staple for health. But why? Mostly to boost sales. Truth is, after we’re weaned as babies, we’re not even meant to drink milk, no other mammal does. It’s important we start questioning what’s actually good for us and stop blindly following food traditions that don’t serve our health.

A very powerful approach within holistic eating is aligning your meals with your blood type and incorporating principles from the alkaline diet. These systems suggest that certain foods may work better with your unique biology, reducing inflammation, improving digestion, and supporting natural energy flow. For example, individuals with Type O blood might thrive on a higher-protein, meat-inclusive diet, while Type A individuals may feel better with more plant-based options. Meanwhile, eating more alkaline-forming foods; such as leafy greens, fruits, and seeds can help restore internal pH balance, creating an environment less prone to disease and fatigue. While these frameworks aren't one-size-fits-all, many find they offer a valuable lens for listening to their bodies and fine-tuning their nutritional path. It's about exploring what resonates with your system and honors your spiritual and physical design.

One of the challenges with eating for your blood type is that it can sometimes overlook your unique individual needs such as food sensitivities, gut health, or emotional relationships with eating. What works well for one person may not align with someone else’s healing journey, even if they share the same blood type. It can also be tricky for families with multiple blood types, making meal planning feel fragmented or burdensome, rather than nourishing and unified. In focusing so closely on blood-type rules, there’s a risk of losing sight of core holistic principles like eating whole, God-given foods, staying hydrated, practicing gratitude for meals, and listening to your body’s wisdom above all.

3. Fasting Isn't Only Just Biblical, It's Biochemical

Fasting isn’t only about obedience or humility.
It’s a biochemical reset for your body and a spiritual recalibration for your soul.

When you fast, your body starts cleansing , you’re energy body becomes light, your spirit. You become more sensitive to God’s presence, more aware of hidden emotional blocks, and often receive deeper insights or even dreams.

Fasting breaks more than hunger cycles it breaks spiritual fog.

I can vouch that I have had many significant breakthroughs pulling 40 day fasts. In general, people who are prophetic are advised to fast at minimum twice a week to keep a good connection with God. I feel as a Catholic many of us do not utilize this weapon enough as in other denominations and we should in this spiritual war that is ever more becoming aggressive towards the people of God.

4. The Matrix Uses Food to Control

We’re not just fighting temptation, we’re fighting systems.
The Matrix (or the world system) wants you overfed, addicted, and spiritually numb.

Why do you think most fast food is designed to be addictive?
Why are healthy foods so expensive and processed ones so cheap?

It’s not just about money. It’s about keeping people in a fog of comfort, numbing their pain instead of healing it.
But you’re called to be set apart even in what you eat.

5. How to Eat with Spiritual Awareness

You don’t have to be extreme. But you do need to be alert.

Here are some simple shifts you can begin today:

  • Pray over your food-not out of ritual, but to align your body with your spirit and especially when you eat out of home. You never know who prepared your food and what their overall vibration was. Some people may find this silly, but the intentions, energy and emotions a person is filled with when they cook can be transferred into your meal.

  • Cut down on artificial ingredients-they cloud your emotions and poison your nervous system.

  • Eat foods with life-raw, organic, water-rich whenever possible. Fruits with H3O especially are what your body absorbs best.

  • Notice emotional cravings -are you eating to numb something God wants to heal? Maybe a bit of chocolate when you are feeling under the weather is okay, but gluttony and overeating is not the answer.

Final Reflection: Soul-Fed or Soul-Starved?

You can read your Bible every day, but if your body is exhausted and inflamed, your spirit may still feel disconnected.

Holistic living means inviting God into every bite, every cup of tea, every choice.
Not out of fear but out of a deep desire to keep your temple clear and your signal strong.

Because your soul deserves better than spiritual junk food.

You are sacred. Everything you consume physically and spiritually, should reflect that.
